Converting your Car to a Game Drive Vehicle

Safaris mark one of South Africa’s favourite pastimes, enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, getting out into the majesty of nature can be wholly rewarding when you are adequately prepared for it.

If you are an avid safari enthusiast, readying yourself for your next trip could mean ensuring that your vehicle is equipped for it. So to help you get the most of your next adventure, here’s how you can create a game drive vehicle conversion out of your current 4x4.

Focus of Seating
Seating is, of course, very important for the trip. Around 10 seats in total should be fitted to the vehicle, counting spaces for passengers as well as the driver, this is particularly the case if the car will be put to commercial use. They must also be staggered in height to give everyone a good view, should include footrests for comfort, and should have ample space between their rows.

Upright Roll Bars and Roofs
You should have a minimum of 3 upright roll bars on your vehicle’s frame, with each being a minimum of 2mm in thickness. They should also come complete with canvas or hard-top roofs to keep the sun and weather out.

The frame should also have a side enclosure that is about 350mm thick, and in each part of the frame where passengers (or the driver) enters and exits the vehicle, the vehicle needs to be able to be locked securely.

Safety Equipment
Standard safety equipment such as seatbelts for every passenger should be included in the conversion, however, so too should items such as medical kits and fire extinguishers. Since the vehicle may be in isolated terrain from time to time, it is a good idea to have these essential items on-hand.
